Because Every Kid Deserves A Bike
We’ve all heard the phrase “it’s like riding a bicycle; once you learn, you never forget.” But for some kids, receiving a bike doesn’t come easily.
Bikes are a kids first real opportunity to experience freedom, it also teaches independence while providing a fun, safe, and physical activity. Riding a bike is one of the most grown up things a kid can do, as they learn to operate on their own. There’s a special bond between kids and bikes that can never be broken. Riding a bike is a rite of passage, a chance to explore. Bikes represent fun, freedom, and fresh air – everything that’s good about being a kid.

Benefits of Bike Riding From a Child Development Standpoint

Health & Wellness

Biking is one of the healthy pastimes that kids pick up and almost never outgrow. Here are some of the other benefits of cycling:

There are few activities better than riding a bike when it comes to developing balance, joint strength, and a sense of community.
Develops strength, balance, and overall fitness
Raises metabolic rate and burns calories
Strengthens heart, lungs, and lower-body muscles and bones
Develops and strengthens the muscles surrounding the knees without impact

Community

Bicycling can bridge generations, bring families together, and foster new relationships.

Social acceptance and emotional health are key in creating a positive sense of self. Having the option to ride a bicycle with peers and family members creates a sense of belonging that is critical in every child’s development. Participate in a “shared” activity with others.

Today, hundreds of bicycle clubs are active all across the United States.

Riding a bicycle is an activity that every age can participate in. Riding with adults reinforces a sense of accomplishment, purpose and safety for the child.

All of these benefits serve to increase overall health and well-being while helping to develop a higher self-esteem. Finally, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an hour of aerobic exercise/activity each day for children! What better way than to have fun on a bicycle?

Why We Do it?
The feeling of getting your first bike is something that lasts a lifetime.

Whether it was waiting for you with a bow on the handlebars or sprung on you as a surprise, the rush of excitement as you ran to it and climbed onto the seat is an experience we all share in. Not knowing how to ride didn’t matter, in that moment you were confident and determined to figure it out.

You were the proud owner of your very own piece of freedom. Your first set of wheels. This collection of memories, moments, and emotions is why we do what we do. The adventures created on your bike may fade into distant memory, but you never forgot. And any adult who has had the opportunity to give a child their first bike will tell you, there are few things quite as magical as that moment.

At onbikes we believe that it is our responsibility, as members of this community, to make sure that every child experiences exactly what so many of us did. “Giving is greater than getting”.

We believe that something as simple as a bike can open up a fresh and unseen new world to a child. Waking up a sense of freedom, self-reliance, and mobility. Not to mention a healthy love of the outdoors, which is more important than ever in a world of digital devices.
